VOLTE GALLERY PRESENTS “YOUR NAME IS DIFFERENT THERE”

Volte Gallery in Bombay is currently presenting the exhibition until 8 January 2012, “Your name is different there”, organised by Nancy Adajania.

Adajania, art critic as well as independent curator, proposes a tragic but current theme in the contemporary society, survival, depicted through the Indian artists’ works. She is interested in victims’ witnesses (genocide, displacement, violation of liberty, etc.) to show how their current life is marked by these events of the past that influence the future. Volte Gallery will present photographs and video installations on this subject, by Sheba Chhachhi, Sonia Khurana, Ranbir Kaleka and the collective CAMP (comprising Shaina Anand, Sanjay Bangar and Ashok Sukumaran).

The exhibition is named after a poem written by Indian author, Jeet Thayill, that focuses on various types of protagonists in tragedies: the activist, the quitter, the marginal, the witness of violence and the neighbor. The categories are artificial and the exhibition puts Adajania’s view into perspective: “a victim could probably turn into an attacker”.
